Opponents of Gabba gear up for second round in battle against rebuilding efforts

Local opposition has arisen over plans to close the East Brisbane State School for the redevelopment of the Gabba in preparation for the 2032 Olympics in the Brisbane metropolitan area. Federal Greens leader Adam Bandt, state MP for Maiwar, Michael Berkman, and federal MP for Griffith, Max Chandler-Mather, are leading the opposition, with Chandler-Mather warning the LNP of the backlash they could face for demolishing a public school and park. The East Brisbane State School P&C president, Austin Gibbs, emphasized the negative impact on the community and children if bulldozers were to roll through the playgrounds in preparation for the Olympics.

The federal Greens MPs and local leaders are prepared to renew the fight against the redevelopment plans if necessary. State MP Amy MacMahon, a vocal critic of the Gabba plans, is facing potential defeat in her South Brisbane seat to Labor. Chandler-Mather warns the LNP of the consequences of following through with the demolition of the public school and park, pointing to the fate of the previous premier who attempted a similar move. The school community is eager to engage with LNP leader David Crisafulli to find a solution that doesn’t involve the destruction of public facilities for the Olympics.

The community is adamant that the demolition of the public school and park is not the right image to present to the world as Brisbane prepares for the Olympics. They are urging Crisafulli to engage with the community and work out a solution that doesn’t involve destroying essential public spaces for the sake of the games. The opposition is concerned about the impact on the children and the negative perception that they fear will arise if bulldozers roll through the playgrounds, giving a poor representation of how Brisbane is getting ready for the Olympics.

Local federal Greens MP Max Chandler-Mather issued a warning to the LNP not to make the same mistake as the Palaszczuk Labor government by proceeding with the demolition plans for the school and park. The Greens are prepared to launch a massive campaign against the LNP if they follow through with the demolition. With the counting ongoing for the South Brisbane seat, where a vocal critic of the Gabba plans is facing potential defeat to Labor, the opposition is ready to fight against the redevelopment plans to protect the community’s interests and public spaces.

The opposition to the Gabba redevelopment plans has garnered support from federal and state Green MPs, as well as the local community who are determined to preserve the public school and park. The East Brisbane State School P&C president emphasized the negative impact on the community and children if the demolition were to proceed. They are calling on LNP leader David Crisafulli to engage with the community and find a solution that doesn’t involve the destruction of essential public spaces for the sake of the Olympics. The local Greens MPs are ready to renew the fight against the redevelopment plans if needed to protect the interests of the community and ensure that Brisbane doesn’t present a negative image to the world as it prepares for the Olympics.
