The solar eclipse is causing a lot of excitement across New York, with liquor and beer distributors creating eclipse-branded drinks. Bars in the path of totality are planning parties, and students at SUNY schools are preparing for keggers. SUNY Oswego sophomore Luke Kapczak mentioned that everyone on campus was talking about the eclipse and that class was even canceled on Monday. Frats on campus were expected to host parties that anyone could attend, making it a once-in-a-lifetime event.
Students like Edward Olszewski were excited about the upcoming parties during the eclipse. He mentioned that he would be at one of the frat houses for the day and was looking forward to celebrating with his friends. Additionally, there was an on-campus event with food and music, but Olszewski was more interested in being with his friends for the event. SUNY Oswego was anticipating an influx of tourists for the eclipse, with some 6,000 visitors expected to come to the college town of 17,000. Despite friends not planning to visit for the event, Olszewski expressed a desire for them to join in the celebrations.
Bars and venues across New York were also getting ready for eclipse-themed events. Captain Jack’s Goodtime Tavern in Rochester was planning a sing-off contest followed by eclipse-themed karaoke. Patrick’s Rooftop in Buffalo was selling tickets for viewing the eclipse from the highest patio in the city. Outside the city, Lake Erie Wine Country was promoting a “Lights Out” tour with a pass that included access to 21 wineries leading up to the eclipse on Monday. Breweries across the state were also crafting eclipse-themed drinks like black IPAs.
To enhance the eclipse-watching experience, various brands were selling eclipse-themed cocktails and beverages. TINCUP Bourbon created a “Totality Bundle” for their Total Eclipse Sour cocktail. Other drinks included Mount Gay Eclipse, named after a total solar eclipse in 1910, and Bell’s Oberon Eclipse. Wine brands like Radius Red Blend Eclipse were also marketing their products as perfect companions for watching the eclipse. However, there was a reminder for revelers to be mindful of responsibilities on Tuesday morning as teachers and employers may not be too forgiving of hangovers from eclipse parties.
Despite the excitement around the eclipse parties, students like Olszewski were aiming for a more relaxed gathering with friends. He mentioned that the focus would be more on socializing and having a few drinks rather than hosting a wild party. The Eclipse gave an opportunity for everyone to come together and make the most of this unique experience, bringing friends, sorority girls, and frat guys all together to enjoy the event. Overall, the eclipse was a chance for people to celebrate, have fun, and make lasting memories during this special occasion.
