Steve McMichael, a former Chicago Bears defensive tackle, has been battling ALS for three years. Despite his physical limitations, he still finds ways to connect with those who are important to him. His sister, Kathy McMichael, describes him as her hero and recalls how he supported her during a difficult time in her life. She is looking forward to traveling to Canton, Ohio for his induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame, but if Steve is unable to attend, she will be by his bedside.

Former teammate Mike Singletary visits McMichael and they pray together, even though healing is not possible. Singletary shares stories from their playing days in hopes of bringing a spark of joy to McMichael’s eyes. Another close friend, John Faidutti, has taken on the role of godfather to Steve’s daughter, Macy. He ensures that Steve is informed about everything happening in Macy’s life and provides comfort and support in any way he can.

Ric Flair, a pro wrestling legend and former teammate of McMichael, visits him regularly to bring cheer and laughter to his life. Despite their initial rivalry, Flair considers McMichael to be one of the greatest guys he’s ever known. McMichael and his friends have also formed a band called the Chicago Six, which performs at local events. The band members, including McMichael, continue to play songs that bring back memories of their time together.

Friends and former teammates, like Dan Hampton and Jim Osborne, visit McMichael to lift his spirits and offer support. Hampton, in particular, helped build a wheelchair ramp at McMichael’s house after his ALS diagnosis. Jim McMahon also visits McMichael, trying to engage in small talk even though he knows there may not be responses. Despite the challenges McMichael faces, his friends and loved ones continue to provide unwavering support and companionship.

Visitors like Misty McMichael, John Vincent, Tom Thayer, and Larry Wert share moments of connection with Steve, offering love and support in their own unique ways. McMichael has touched the lives of many through his kindness and generosity, and his friends reciprocate by being there for him during his time of need. Despite his physical decline, he continues to inspire those around him and leave a lasting impact on everyone he encounters.

In the face of ALS, Steve McMichael remains a fighter with a spirit that cannot be quenched. His friends and loved ones stand by his side, offering comfort, companionship, and unwavering support. While his physical condition may have diminished, his legacy of kindness, generosity, and perseverance lives on in the hearts of those who know and love him. As they come to give to Steve, they leave having received the gift of his enduring spirit.
