The newsroom, which was established in 1926, is housed in a building that may have been a fallout shelter. The structure is one of the few in the area that may survive the recent tornado that devastated downtown Sulphur. However, there are concerns that the town may condemn the building and demolish it alongside other affected buildings. Business owners and their families are salvaging what they can from the wreckage, with maintenance trucks and disaster relief workers cleaning up the debris.

The tornado caused some buildings to completely crumple, while others show the precise damage of tornadic winds. A sports grill collapsed, resulting in the unfortunate death of a resident who was seeking refuge from the storm. The historic downtown area of Sulphur, which dates back to before statehood in 1907, is known for its tourism industry due to the nearby Chickasaw National Recreation Area. Visitors often come to experience the natural springs believed to have medicinal qualities, although the smell of sulfur in the springs is described as unbearable.

Reporters from various media outlets have descended upon Sulphur to cover the aftermath of the tornado, prompting the local newspaper staff to focus on highlighting the strength and resilience of the community. They have decided to delay the publication of the newspaper by a day but are determined to get through this challenging period. Despite the chaos and devastation surrounding them, the newspaper staff is determined to highlight the positive stories emerging from the disaster, including the willingness of people to assist each other and the limited number of fatalities.

The atmosphere in Sulphur is filled with the scent of leather from the damaged Billy Cook Harness & Saddle store, contrasting with the typical sulfur smell from the natural springs. The town’s historic downtown area, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, has suffered significant damage, with debris lining the streets and businesses struggling to recover. The newspaper staff is overwhelmed by the ongoing recovery efforts and the logistics of rebuilding, but they are committed to keeping the community informed and staying resilient in the face of adversity. Sulphur’s residents and business owners are banding together to support one another and rebuild their town.

As the recovery efforts continue, the community is rallying together to overcome the challenges posed by the tornado. The newspaper staff, despite facing their own obstacles with the damaged building, are dedicated to keeping the community informed and optimistic during this difficult time. With the support of local residents and assistance from volunteers and relief workers, Sulphur is beginning to rebuild and look towards a brighter future. Despite the destruction and loss caused by the tornado, the resilience and unity of the Sulphur community shines through in the midst of adversity.
