Officials say US to allocate $6 billion for Ukraine’s long-term weapon contracts

The U.S. is set to provide approximately $6 billion in long-term military aid to Ukraine, including much-needed munitions for Patriot air defense systems. This aid will be funded through the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative, which pays for longer-term contracts with the defense industry. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss details not yet made public. The aid package will include a wide array of munitions for air defense, such as the National Advanced Surface to Air Missile System (NASAM) and the High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS), among others.

Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin is expected to announce this aid package as he convenes a virtual meeting on Friday of defense officials from Europe and around the world to discuss international assistance for Ukraine. The gathering, known as the Ukraine Defense Contact Group, has been meeting monthly for the past two years and is the primary forum for weapons contributions to Kyiv for the ongoing war. The $6 billion aid package is the largest tranche of USAI aid sent to date and will provide critical weapons and equipment to Ukraine to help counter Russian forces.

Earlier this week, the White House approved the delivery of $1 billion in weapons and equipment to Ukraine, including ammunition, air defense munitions, artillery rounds, armored vehicles, and other weapons. This aid will reach Ukraine quickly as it is being pulled off Pentagon shelves, including warehouses in Europe. The funding for these aid packages comes from a new infusion of about $61 billion for Ukraine that was passed by Congress and signed into law by President Joe Biden. These weapons are essential for Ukraine to push back against Russian forces and stall their advances in the war.

Despite bitter division among members of Congress, a bipartisan coalition was formed to pass the $95 billion foreign aid package, which also included funds for Israel and Taiwan. The aid package passed the House on Saturday and the Senate on Tuesday. Senior U.S. officials have described dire battlefield conditions in Ukraine, with troops running low on munitions and Russian forces making gains. Since Russia’s invasion in February 2022, the U.S. has sent over $44 billion worth of weapons, maintenance, training, and spare parts to Ukraine. However, Ukraine has had to sideline Abrams M1A1 battle tanks due to difficulties operating them in the face of Russian drone warfare.

The aid provided by the U.S. to Ukraine is crucial in helping the country defend itself against Russian aggression. The ongoing conflict in Ukraine has drawn international attention, with many countries stepping up to provide support to the Ukrainian forces. The aid package announced by the U.S. is expected to make a significant impact in the ongoing war, providing Ukraine with the necessary resources to continue resisting Russian forces. This aid is just one part of the broader international effort to support Ukraine in its fight for sovereignty and territorial integrity.
