Two Russian strikes on Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second-largest city, resulted in the deaths of eight civilians and injuries to at least 10 people. The first attack took place just after midnight, resulting in six deaths and 10 injuries in the Shevchenkivskyi district of Kharkiv. The death toll later rose to seven. A second attack later in the day caused at least one more death, along with injuries. U.S. Ambassador Bridget A. Brink condemned the attacks, emphasizing the need to support Ukraine in defending its people against such unprovoked aggression. Kharkiv, located in Ukraine’s northeast, has been a frequent target of Russian attacks, with incidents intensifying in recent weeks.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s chief of Staff, Andriy Yermak, identified Kharkiv as a likely target for a new Russian offensive in May or June. Kharkiv regional Governor Oleh Synehubov reported additional strikes on a residential building and a village north of the city, although no casualties were reported in these incidents. Air raid alerts were in effect for Kharkiv and most of the country, including the capital Kyiv, following the attacks. Ukraine’s military claimed that its air defenses successfully intercepted and destroyed a significant number of drones and missiles launched by Russia.
