The New York City Football Club honored slain NYPD Detective Jonathan Diller with a moment of silence before their game at Citi Field. Diller’s mother, sister, cousin, and 11 members of his command were in attendance for the emotional pre-game ceremony, which inspired the team to a 2-0 victory over DC United. CEO Jennifer O’Sullivan expressed her gratitude that the family accepted the invitation to be there, emphasizing the importance of acknowledging Diller’s service, sacrifice, and the legacy he leaves behind for his son and family.

The tribute to Diller took place nearly a month after he was fatally shot during a traffic stop in Queens. O’Sullivan, whose husband is a retired NYPD detective, had the honor of presenting the family members with NYCFC jerseys during the ceremony. She shared a lighthearted moment with Diller’s mother about turning his young son into an NYCFC fan, even though his father was known for being an avid New York Islanders supporter. Mayor Eric Adams also paid tribute to Diller during the ceremony, acknowledging his service as a Queens officer and the importance of bringing the community together.

The ceremony at Citi Field was part of several tributes that Diller and his family have received in recent weeks. The Mets and Diller’s favorite hockey team have also honored him, including a 50/50 raffle that raised $76,000 for his surviving family. Diller was shot by career criminal Guy Rivera, who has a long history of criminal activity, after his vehicle was approved by Diller and his partner during a routine patrol last month. Rivera has been indicted on multiple charges, including murder and attempted murder, and could face life in prison if convicted.

In addition to Rivera, Lindy Jones, who was in the driver’s seat during the killing, is also facing charges of criminal possession of a weapon and may receive a 15 year prison sentence. The ceremony at Citi Field was a way to honor Diller’s memory and recognize the sacrifices made by NYPD officers, with Mayor Adams emphasizing the importance of bringing the community together in celebration and remembrance. The ceremony also marked a turning point for NYCFC, as they look forward to building a new stadium in Willets Point, strengthening their ties to the Queens community and first responders.
