Ediz Ün, a member of the Turkish Parliament from the CHP party, found himself in a controversy after two individuals in a car belonging to him were caught with a large quantity of electronic cigarettes designated for smuggling. The police stopped the car at a toll booth and discovered 530 empty electronic cigarette boxes, 2,242 electronic cigarette kits, 2,790 electronic cigarette heads, 1,275 electronic cigarette lighters, 130 liquid tanks, and 18 cigarette liquids. The suspects, identified as F.A. and Ç.R.Ç., voluntarily handed over the items to the authorities and were released after being processed for “customs smuggling” charges.
Upon learning about the incident, Ediz Ün clarified on social media that he had entrusted the car in question to his unofficial advisor F.A. He emphasized that he had no knowledge or involvement in the illegal activities of the individuals using his vehicle. Ün stated that he was informed by law enforcement after the smuggling goods were loaded into the car and the suspects were en route to Istanbul. He recounted how he cooperated with the police by allowing a search of the vehicle and requested that no special treatment be accorded to the suspects due to his status as a Member of Parliament.
Expressing his zero tolerance for illegal behavior, Ün revealed that he had made a formal complaint to the Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office against the suspects. He elaborated on his stance regarding the situation, highlighting that the individuals had attempted to take advantage of his privileges as a politician by using his vehicle for criminal activities without his knowledge or consent. Ün stressed that he was proactive in ensuring the law took its course and that the suspects faced the necessary legal consequences without any preferential treatment.
