None of the aid from US pier off coast of Gaza has been distributed to wider Palestinian population, Pentagon reports

The temporary pier constructed off the coast of Gaza by the US has not resulted in any aid being delivered to the broader Palestinian population yet. The aid is being held in an assembly area on shore until safe delivery routes can be established inside Gaza. The US is working with Israel and the United Nations to find alternative routes for the aid to be distributed. The aid that has been transported to Gaza is being moved to warehouses for distribution as routes are being identified.

Despite efforts to deliver aid, challenges have arisen with the logistics of getting the assistance to those in need. The amount of aid arriving in Gaza has fallen short of initial estimates, with 569 metric tons of assistance being delivered through the temporary pier so far. The US had hoped to transport 500 tons of aid per day initially and scale up from there. Some aid was intercepted by desperate Gazans over the weekend, leading to a suspension of delivery operations until safer routes can be implemented.

The US has faced multiple challenges with the aid delivery operation, including security concerns around Israel’s operations in Rafah, issues with transportation of aid into Gaza, and weather conditions impacting the use of the pier. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin is in communication with Israeli officials to explore alternative ways of getting aid into Gaza, including through land routes like Rafah. The goal is to provide aid to the entire population of Gaza, which is facing acute food insecurity.

The US has also made air drops of humanitarian aid into Gaza in partnership with the Royal Jordanian Air Force. These air drops have helped to distribute aid to those in need, with over 370 pallets of aid being distributed in Gaza on a recent day. The US is working with international and interagency partners to address the urgent humanitarian needs of the Palestinian people. Efforts to secure safe delivery routes and facilitate aid distribution are ongoing, with a focus on ensuring that aid reaches those who need it the most.

During discussions with Israeli officials, the US raised concerns about humanitarian aid distribution and made specific requests that the Israelis have agreed to implement. This includes facilitating aid distribution by allowing aid scanned in Cyprus to be sent directly to the Israeli port of Ashdod, bypassing Egypt. The US and Israeli officials share the goal of addressing the humanitarian crisis in Gaza while also working to combat Hamas. The conversations have been constructive, and there is optimism about progress in the coming days.

Overall, the US is committed to working with international partners to provide humanitarian aid to the people of Gaza. Despite challenges and logistical issues, efforts are ongoing to ensure that aid reaches those facing acute food insecurity in the region. The focus is on finding safe delivery routes, exploring alternative methods of aid distribution, and continuing to work towards addressing the urgent needs of the Palestinian population.
