Nine New Yorkers share their Botox routine: ‘It’s like getting their nails done’

The trend of using cosmetic procedures, such as Botox and fillers, as part of a regular beauty regimen is becoming increasingly normalized, with many individuals viewing these treatments as a form of grooming rather than drastic cosmetic surgery. This shift in perception has led to more people, particularly in New York City, openly discussing and embracing these procedures as essential components of their self-care routines. Some individuals, like 35-year-old Gillian Del Zotto, initially felt hesitant to reveal their use of cosmetic procedures but now find it common and acceptable to discuss openly.

Women of different ages and backgrounds, such as 39-year-old Hannah Belisle and 82-year-old Nikki Haskell, have integrated Botox and fillers into their beauty routines as a way to maintain a youthful appearance and boost their self-confidence. For some, like 29-year-old Tammy Smith, undergoing these procedures has become a routine form of self-care, similar to getting a manicure or pedicure. However, there are those, such as 46-year-old Aimee Denaro Becker, who do not prioritize cosmetic procedures and are content with the aging process, choosing to spend their time and money on other priorities.

For individuals like 44-year-old Keresse Dorcely and 30-year-old Liz Lindenmeier, receiving Botox and fillers is viewed as a way to enhance their natural appearance rather than striving to look younger than their age. These individuals see these treatments as part of their self-care routines and enjoy the social aspect of visiting the med spa with friends for treatments. In contrast, 25-year-old Meghan Doran feels pressured to undergo cosmetic procedures due to societal expectations and the influence of marketing, leading her to continuously invest in maintaining her youthful appearance.

Not all individuals find cosmetic procedures like Botox to be suitable for their preferences or financial constraints. Personal chef Ari Botsford tried Botox but ultimately found that the temporary results did not justify the cost, and she prefers not to rely on such procedures to address deeper issues. While the acceptance and popularity of cosmetic procedures have grown in recent years, individual choices and attitudes towards aging and self-care vary widely among women of different ages and backgrounds in New York City.

Overall, the normalization of cosmetic procedures such as Botox and fillers has led to greater acceptance and openness among individuals in enhancing their appearance and self-esteem. While some view these treatments as essential components of their beauty and self-care routines, others prioritize natural aging and self-acceptance. The decision to undergo cosmetic procedures remains a personal choice influenced by factors such as individual values, societal pressures, and financial considerations, highlighting the diverse attitudes towards beauty and aging in contemporary society.
