New Venezuela election proposed by US and Brazil rejected by government and opposition

The content discusses the potential for a new election in Venezuela following the recent disputed election results. U.S. President Joe Biden and Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva both expressed support for a new election, suggesting that international observers be involved to address the political crisis in the country. The U.S. has rejected Maduro’s victory claim and imposed oil sanctions on Venezuela for not complying with electoral conditions. Despite calls for a new election from the international community, both Maduro and his opposition have shown little support for the idea.

Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado rejected the idea of a new election, emphasizing that the election has already taken place and that Maduro must be held accountable for the current situation. Lula suggested the possibility of a “coalition government” as another solution for Venezuela, while also calling on Maduro to publish voting tallies that have not been released. Colombian counterpart Gustavo Petro proposed a temporary power-sharing arrangement between the ruling party and the opposition as a potential solution to the crisis.

Latin American leaders are set to discuss the Venezuela crisis during an upcoming meeting in the Dominican Republic. Lula’s top foreign policy advisor, Celso Amorim, clarified that Brazil has not formally proposed a new election in Venezuela. The Lula administration faced criticism from conservative senators for their perceived soft stance towards Maduro, with concerns raised about the treatment of jailed opposition leaders. Amorim revealed that Brazil had offered to help six opposition members seeking asylum at the Argentine embassy now under Brazilian protection.

The Venezuelan electoral authority declared Maduro as the winner of the vote with 51%, but the full vote tallies have not been disclosed. The opposition has released their own tallies showing a different outcome, with their candidate receiving 67% of the vote. As the international community, particularly the U.S. and Brazil, continue to call for a new election in Venezuela, the ruling party and the opposition have yet to show significant support for this proposal. The crisis in Venezuela remains unresolved as world leaders seek a political solution to address the disputed election results and ongoing political turmoil.
