Former President Jimmy Carter will be honored with funeral services in Georgia and Washington, D.C., beginning Saturday, Jan. 4, and concluding Thursday, Jan. 9. The events will include a state funeral in which Carter’s remains will be transported from Phoebe Sumter Medical Center in Americus, Georgia, to Plains, Georgia, and then to Atlanta. The procession will stop at Georgia’s State Capitol for a moment of silence before arriving at the Carter Presidential Center for an arrival ceremony and service. Following the service, Carter will lie in repose for mourners to pay their respects.
The funeral events will continue on Sunday, Jan. 5, and Monday, Jan. 6, with Carter lying in repose at the Carter Presidential Center. On Tuesday, Jan. 7, Carter’s remains will depart the Carter Presidential Center and travel to Dobbins Air Reserve Base, Georgia, where they will board a special Air Mission 39 to travel to Washington. Upon arrival at Joint Base Andrews, Maryland, Carter’s remains will be transferred with ceremony to a hearse for a motorcade to the U.S. Navy Memorial. Carter will then be carried into the Rotunda of the U.S. Capitol, where members of Congress will pay their respects during a service. The public will be invited to pay their respects from 7 p.m. to midnight.
On Wednesday, Jan. 8, Carter will continue to lie in state at the U.S. Capitol. The funeral events will conclude on Thursday, Jan. 9, with Carter departing the U.S. Capitol and traveling to Washington National Cathedral for a National Funeral Service. Following the service, Carter and his family will travel to Joint Base Andrews to board Special Air Mission 39, which will arrive at Lawson Army Airfield on Fort Moore, Georgia. Carter’s remains will then be transferred with ceremony to a hearse for a motorcade to Maranatha Baptist Church in Plains, Georgia, for a private funeral service. The public is invited to line the motorcade route through Plains to Carter’s final resting place.
Prior to interment, the U.S. Navy will conduct a missing man formation flyover in honor of Carter’s naval service and time as commander-in-chief. The private interment at the Carter residence is scheduled for 5:20 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 9. The public is invited to pay their respects along the motorcade route as Carter is laid to rest. The funeral services honoring Former President Jimmy Carter will be a time for the nation to come together to remember his legacy and contributions to the country. The events will provide an opportunity for mourners to pay their respects and honor Carter’s life and service.
