Former SPD leader Franz Müntefering has harshly criticized Sahra Wagenknecht and her supporters, particularly in response to a campaign poster for the European elections. The poster in question poses the question “War or Peace? You can choose!” which Müntefering finds outrageous, questioning the sanity of those behind it. He also criticized Wagenknecht’s husband, Oskar Lafontaine, calling him lazy and blaming his departure from the SPD in 1999 for the party’s subsequent decline. Müntefering expressed his concern about the ongoing question of who will be the SPD’s candidate for chancellor in the 2025 federal elections, stating that the decision-making process within the party is still ongoing.

Müntefering was shocked by the message on the European election campaign posters of the Bündnis Sahra Wagenknecht, which presents a stark choice between war and peace for voters. He criticized the simplistic nature of this messaging, raising doubts about the rationality of those promoting it. Furthermore, Müntefering took a swipe at Oskar Lafontaine, Wagenknecht’s husband, accusing him of laziness and suggesting that his departure from the SPD had negative consequences for the party. Regarding the upcoming Bundestagswahl, Müntefering emphasized that the decision on the SPD’s candidate for chancellor has not yet been finalized, despite speculation in the media about potential contenders such as Boris Pistorius and Olaf Scholz.
