Mum was mistakenly labeled a hypochondriac but was actually diagnosed with a life-changing disease

Sarah Heney, a 60-year-old mum from Edinburgh, struggled for years with unexplained health problems and was made to feel like a hypochondriac by her GP. After numerous visits to the doctors for various issues, she was eventually diagnosed with lupus, an invisible condition that forced her to retire from her job in her 40s. This non-curable long-term condition can cause joint pain, skin rashes, and fatigue, and in severe cases, it can lead to life-threatening complications. It was in 2009 when she saw a different doctor who suggested that her symptoms were due to something systemic, possibly Rheumatoid Arthritis.

As she waited for her rheumatology appointment, Sarah did her own research on the condition. However, upon her next appointment, she was told it wasn’t arthritis or lupus. More tests were conducted, and during this time, her health began to deteriorate rapidly. With a family to look after, including her child and stepchildren, Sarah’s health struggles included lung and kidney issues, extreme joint pain, hair loss, severe headaches, rashes, fatigue, and cognitive dysfunction. She experienced difficulties at work and eventually had to retire at the age of 48. After a suspected stroke incident, she was diagnosed with Antiphospholipid syndrome, a blood clotting disease that had been left untreated.

Her private specialist immediately put her on anticoagulants, which improved her condition within 48 hours. Her husband noticed a significant change and said, “I have my Sarah back!” Sarah emphasized the importance of awareness of lupus and other lesser-known diseases. While she was unsure of what triggered her lupus flare-up, she recalled a stressful time in her life when she lost her father and had to put her cat down. A bite from her cat led to a Bartonella infection, resulting in further health complications. Despite her struggles, Sarah remains positive due to the support network around her.

The article also touches on cabin cases suitable for passengers of Ryanair, Jet2, and easyJet. It provides a list of six recommended cabin cases that travelers can consider for their trips. This information may be helpful for individuals looking for suitable luggage options when flying with these specific airlines. Ultimately, the article highlights Sarah Heney’s journey with lupus and aims to raise awareness about the challenges faced by those living with the condition. Sarah’s story serves as a reminder of the importance of early diagnosis and access to appropriate medical care for individuals with chronic illnesses.
