The “emotional eater” tipped the scales at 27st 9lb after years of gorging and her efforts to thin down had always failed. But hearing that she may not get to see her two granddaughters grow up spurred her on to save her sight and her life. And she is now proud to be Slimming World’s Greatest Loser 2024 after shedding 16st 2½lb – dropping to 11st 6½lb and from a size 32 dress to a size 10. Joanne, 48, said: “I knew I had to make a change if I wanted to live to see my grandkids grow up. Losing weight was the best decision I ever made. My life has changed beyond recognition. “I wasn’t in the right mindset though and didn’t stick to the plan. My confidence was at an all-time low and I struggled to get involved in social activities with my family.” Mother of two Joanne, a social worker, was diagnosed with intracranial hypertension in 2019 but has now put the neurological condition into remission. She said: “I no longer have to take medication for my IH and it’s a huge relief not having to worry about losing my sight. I live a healthier and happier life with my family now, rather than watching from the sidelines. I can do all the things with my granddaughters, Charlotte and Grace, I missed out on with my own children, like swimming.” Joanne, of Norwich, Norfolk, now eats healthily, uses an exercise bike and visits a local gym. She said: “I didn’t do any exercise and even walking was difficult. My mobility has improved tenfold and as a result so have my mental and physical health.” Joanne’s confidence has also soared.
