Mother shares grief over loss of son killed by dogs in Edmonton: ‘I would have never let him go’

Kendrah Wong’s son, Kache Grist, was tragically killed by two large dogs in Edmonton just before his 12th birthday. Wong and Kache had recently moved to Osoyoos for a fresh start, but Kache returned to Edmonton to spend spring break with his father. Unfortunately, he was attacked by the dogs while at his father’s home, just an hour before he was supposed to return to Osoyoos. Wong described her son as adventurous, courageous, and loved by everyone. Kache enjoyed picking sage and selling it at a local store, as well as writing comics and playing video games.

There had been multiple complaints about the dogs involved in the attack, including two reports of attacks earlier in that year. The City of Edmonton confirms that one of the attacks is still under investigation. Wong expressed shock at the incident, stating that she would never have let Kache go if she had known about the previous complaints. The Edmonton Police Service conducted an autopsy on the boy, confirming that the cause of death was a dog bite. The manner of death is pending further investigation, which will determine if any criminal charges will be laid against the dogs’ owners.

In general, animal owners are liable for the actions of their pets, according to an Edmonton personal injury lawyer. Depending on the circumstances, if an animal hurts someone and there have been prior complaints, the owner could face criminal charges for negligence. Victims of animal attacks can seek advice and help from a personal injury lawyer, and owners whose pets have caused harm may have coverage through their home insurance. The police investigation into Kache’s death is ongoing, while the community is rallying around his family to offer support and assistance.

The Edmonton community is coming together to support Kache’s family in the wake of his tragic death. A local business, the Canadian Brewhouse, has offered to host fundraisers or gatherings to support the family. A GoFundMe campaign has also been started to help the family cover funeral costs and other expenses. Wong expressed her need for support during this difficult time, recounting the last moment she shared with her son before his passing. The two dogs involved in the attack are currently in custody of the City of Edmonton’s Animal Care and Control section as the investigation continues. The loss of Kache has brought a wave of sympathy and compassion from the community as they come together to help his family through this devastating time.
