‘Morning Joe’ hosts join internal NBC backlash over Ronna McDaniel’s hiring as a contributor

NBC News’ decision to hire former Republican National Committee head Ronna McDaniel as a paid contributor has sparked internal controversy within the network. MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” hosts expressed strong objections to McDaniel’s hiring, stating that they would not have her on their show and urging NBC to reconsider. The hosts, Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski, learned about McDaniel’s hiring through press reports and criticized her for her role in former President Donald Trump’s “fake elector scheme.”

Brzezinski emphasized that while NBC News should seek out conservative Republican voices for balanced election coverage, it should not hire someone like McDaniel who used her position to propagate anti-democracy ideals. NBC has stated that it will be up to individual MSNBC producers and personalities to decide whether McDaniel will appear on the network, which primarily appeals to liberal viewers. Brzezinski also noted that she would not appear on “Morning Joe” in her capacity as a paid NBC contributor.

The hosts highlighted a past exchange between McDaniel and current “Meet the Press” moderator, Kristen Welker, where McDaniel admitted to holding back her true beliefs while serving as RNC chair. The hiring of politicians as analysts and commentators by television news outlets is not uncommon, but McDaniel’s association with Trump’s false claims about the 2020 election outcome has generated further sensitivity, particularly in the aftermath of the Jan. 6 Capitol siege.

McDaniel’s evolving statements on the 2020 election outcome were also scrutinized, as she initially expressed doubts about Joe Biden’s victory but later acknowledged it. Despite this acknowledgement, McDaniel’s past comments endorsing Trump’s baseless allegations of voter fraud continue to cast a shadow over her credibility as a political commentator. The hiring of former government officials from the Trump administration by other news outlets, such as CBS and CNN, has also faced criticism, indicating the delicate balance networks navigate in maintaining credibility and diversity of perspectives.

The “Morning Joe” ban on McDaniel reflects the show’s stance against Trump’s actions post-election and its support for President Joe Biden. The show has been persistent in its criticism of partisan loyalty over truth-telling and has pushed back against the normalization of misinformation in media coverage. As the debate over McDaniel’s hiring unfolds, the role of networks in amplifying diverse voices while upholding journalistic integrity remains a topic of scrutiny in the evolving media landscape. The clash between political affiliations and journalistic responsibilities continues to shape the dynamics of news commentary and analysis in an increasingly polarized society.
