The majority of people decide what movie to watch based on word of mouth recommendations, which increasingly occur in the virtual world. According to a study by the cinema-focused producer AMC, 23.37% of Spaniards trust social media and influencers for movie choices, while 27.06% rely on ratings on specialized websites like IMDb and Filmaffinity. However, the preferred option for 60.33% of Spaniards is still direct recommendations from friends or family. Recommendations from film experts in the media are considered by 42.57% of respondents, and awards received by movies are taken into account by 29.57%.
The data presented in the study by AMC Networks International Southern Europe (AMCNISE), which surveyed 1,515 people in May 2021, also reveals interesting preferences in terms of movie genres and directors. The survey maintained the gender and age proportion of Spain, showcasing popular choices such as the Star Wars saga, Titanic, Harry Potter, and other iconic films. The study found that 70% of Spaniards watch more than five movies per month, with 25% watching over 10, emphasizing the social aspect of movie-watching. The study also highlighted the importance of both cinema and home viewing experiences, reinforcing the idea that both settings contribute to film appreciation.
When it comes to favorite directors, Steven Spielberg is the clear choice for Spaniards across all generations, with Pedro Almodóvar and Quentin Tarantino following behind. Popular actors among Spanish audiences include Brad Pitt, Robert De Niro, and Julia Roberts, with Antonio Banderas and Penélope Cruz also featuring in the top rankings. The study reflects a trend towards appreciating international cinema, with directors like Isabel Coixet and foreign language films receiving significant recognition. The study suggests that aspiring female filmmakers should consider learning English and creating a saga to increase their chances of success in the industry.
Overall, the study sheds light on the evolving preferences of Spanish moviegoers and the various factors that influence their movie choices. While traditional forms of recommendation like word of mouth remain influential, online platforms and specialized websites play an increasingly significant role in decision-making. The survey results also highlight the social aspect of movie-watching and the continued popularity of certain genres and franchises across different age groups. The findings emphasize the diverse tastes of Spanish audiences and the importance of both domestic and theatrical viewing experiences in shaping film appreciation.
