Modi’s Victory on the Horizon as India’s 6-Week General Election Kicks Off in World’s Largest Democracy

India is currently in the midst of its general election, with nearly 970 million Indians eligible to vote. Incumbent Prime Minister Narendra Modi is favored to win a third term, as many view him as a strong leader who has improved the standard of living, particularly for the middle class. Modi’s reign has been marked by economic success, despite the global challenges brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic. His popularity spans across different income levels and social categories, as he is seen as a common man who has risen to power and delivered on promises of clean governance and development.

Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party has campaigned extensively, even in states where it has traditionally not fared well. Despite some controversies, Modi’s achievements include overseeing economic growth, rescuing neighboring countries like Sri Lanka during their financial crises, and fulfilling Hindu nationalist aspirations such as the construction of the Ram Mandhir temple in Ayodhya. However, critics argue that Modi’s policies favor the Hindu majority at the expense of minority communities, leading to concerns about the erosion of democratic institutions and rights in India.

Foreign relations have been a strong suit for Modi, who has maintained ties with major world powers such as the U.S., Russia, Israel, and Iran. His neutrality in international conflicts, such as the Russia-Ukraine war, has been noted. While some observers caution against Modi’s potential third term leading to a further crackdown on minorities and civil society, others argue that India’s economic growth and strategic importance will continue to attract foreign investment and support regardless of the political climate.

Despite concerns about the potential erosion of democracy and dissent under Modi’s leadership, the State Department has affirmed India’s status as the world’s largest democracy and an important strategic partner of the United States. Modi’s solid support base, coupled with a weak opposition and positive poll results, suggest that he is likely to secure a third term as Prime Minister. The final results of the election are expected to be announced on June 4, with Modi’s administration facing scrutiny over its treatment of minorities and democratic norms.
