Miranda Lambert, Billie Eilish, and Nicki Minaj write letter to AI developers advocating for artists’ rights

The Artist Rights Alliance, a non-profit organization advocating for musicians in the digital economy, recently submitted an open letter signed by over 200 artists. The letter calls on artificial intelligence tech companies and digital music services to stop using AI in ways that infringe upon and devalue the rights of human artists. While recognizing the creative potential of AI technology, the letter highlights the threat posed by using preexisting work to train AI models without permission, which could lead to the replacement of artists and a reduction in royalty pools paid out to artists.

The letter emphasizes the need to protect human creativity from predatory use of AI that could steal artists’ voices and likenesses, violate creators’ rights, and disrupt the music ecosystem. Furthermore, the Artist Rights Alliance stresses the importance of safeguarding against the abusive use of AI to preserve the integrity of the art industry. Last month, Tennessee became the first state to pass legislation, known as the “ELVIS Act,” aimed at protecting songwriters, performers, and other music professionals from the potential risks associated with AI technology. This law, which will take effect on July 1, seeks to prevent generative AI tools from replicating an artist’s voice without their consent.

Supporters of the “ELVIS Act” in Tennessee believe that it is crucial to recognize and protect the intellectual property and unique talents of artists in the music industry. Governor Bill Lee highlighted the significance of artists’ individuality and creativity, emphasizing that artificial intelligence should not infringe upon or replicate their distinctive voices. The legislation reflects a commitment to upholding the rights and interests of musicians in the face of evolving technological advancements that could pose threats to their livelihoods.

The implementation of the “ELVIS Act” signals a proactive step towards ensuring that artists are shielded from unauthorized use of their work and identities through AI technology. By establishing legal protections for musicians, songwriters, and performers, Tennessee aims to establish clear boundaries and safeguards to prevent exploitation of artists’ creations. The move underscores the state’s recognition of the importance of respecting artists’ rights and talents in an era where artificial intelligence is increasingly being used in the music industry.

As the debate over the impact of AI on the creative industries continues, the involvement of prominent artists and industry figures in advocating for artist rights is crucial. The Artist Rights Alliance’s open letter serves as a strong statement against the misuse of AI to undermine human creativity and jeopardize the livelihoods of musicians. By uniting in their efforts to protect artists’ voices and rights, the music community is sending a message that technological advancements should not come at the expense of artistic integrity and fair compensation for creators.
