Minister asserts that Italy should support new EU sanctions against Russian gas

Italy has successfully reduced its dependence on Russian gas, with less than 5% of its gas imports coming from Russia in 2022, down from 43% in 2020. Italian Energy Minister Gilberto Pichetto Fratin stated that Italy can now operate without Russian gas altogether, thanks to increased pipeline gas imports from the Trans-Adriatic Pipeline and agreements with Algeria and Libya to diversify its energy sources. Fratin expressed support for proposed EU sanctions on Russian liquified natural gas (LNG), noting that Italy has sufficient gas supply from various sources and regasification terminals.

The European Union is working on a 14th package of sanctions in response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, which may include an import ban on Russian LNG. Italy’s position on supporting these sanctions reflects its commitment to diversifying its energy sources and reducing emissions to meet net-zero goals. The Italian government, under Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, has also outlined plans to invest in Africa to create an energy transit hub between the continent and Europe, as well as to address poverty, climate change, and immigration issues. Italy’s focus on collaboration with African countries aligns with its efforts to promote sustainable energy solutions.

In a show of support for Ukraine, Italy has agreed to provide a subsidized loan worth 100 million euros ($107.8 million) to the state-owned energy company Ukrhydroenergo. This loan aims to bolster Ukraine’s energy sector and support the country during its conflict with Russia. Italy’s involvement in providing financial aid to Ukraine highlights its solidarity with the Ukrainian government and its commitment to supporting countries affected by conflicts. The loan represents a tangible contribution from Italy to help Ukraine strengthen its energy infrastructure and resilience.

Italy’s decision to reduce its reliance on Russian gas and support EU sanctions on Russian LNG reflects a broader shift towards diversifying energy sources and promoting sustainable practices. By investing in alternative energy solutions and collaborating with African countries, Italy is demonstrating its commitment to addressing global challenges such as climate change and energy security. The country’s willingness to support Ukraine through financial assistance further underscores its dedication to standing with allies in times of need. Italy’s actions serve as a model for other nations seeking to reduce dependence on fossil fuels and support international efforts towards a more sustainable future.
