The Tampa Bay Buccaneers secured the NFC South title and the final playoff berth in the NFC by defeating the New Orleans Saints in Week 18. Quarterback Baker Mayfield had the opportunity to take a victory formation in the final seconds of the game, but instead, he chose to help his favorite target, Mike Evans, reach a significant milestone. Evans needed five catches and 85 yards to earn a $3 million bonus and achieve NFL history by becoming the first player to start their career with 11 consecutive 1,000-yard seasons, tying Jerry Rice’s record. Mayfield threw a quick pass to Evans in the fourth quarter, allowing Evans to surpass the milestone and make history.

As Evans reached 89 yards from nine catches, he secured the $3 million bonus and the place in NFL history that he had been aiming for. The stadium erupted in celebration as Evans achieved the milestone, with his teammates running over to congratulate him. Evans expressed his gratitude for his coaches’ decision to allow him to pursue the record, recognizing the significance of being tied with the legendary Jerry Rice. Mayfield also praised Evans for his contributions to the team and the community, emphasizing the importance of Evans’ accomplishment.

After completing his 11th NFL season, all with the Buccaneers, Evans finished with 1,004 receiving yards, helping the team secure the No. 4 seed in the NFC playoffs. In addition to his $3 million bonus, Evans will receive a $666,666 incentive for finishing in the top 10 in wide receiver touchdowns across the NFL. The Buccaneers, winners of the NFC South for the fourth consecutive season, will face either the Detroit Lions or the Minnesota Vikings in the playoffs as the No. 5 seed, awaiting the outcome of the respective matchup.

Evans’ record-breaking achievement and the Buccaneers’ victory over the Saints in Week 18 highlighted the team’s resilience and commitment to success. Mayfield’s decision to assist Evans in reaching the milestone demonstrated the camaraderie and support within the team, showcasing the strong bond between players and coaches. As the Buccaneers look forward to the playoffs, Evans’ accomplishment serves as a testament to his dedication and skill as a wide receiver in the NFL. The entire organization and fan base celebrate Evans’ historic achievement and eagerly anticipate the team’s postseason journey.
