Migrant squatters in NYC found with drugs and guns had been previously apprehended at the southern border and released by ICE.

Eight Venezuelan illegal immigrant squatters were arrested in a New York City home after being found with drugs and guns. These individuals had previously been apprehended at the southern border and released into the U.S. One of the migrants was suspected of murder, but the case fell apart when the victim refused to cooperate. Three of the squatters were re-arrested on Wednesday, while detainer requests were lodged for four others being held in local custody. One of the migrants remains on the loose.

Hector Desousa-Villalta, one of the migrants arrested on Wednesday, had been previously arrested in August. He was allegedly waving a gun and was initially released without bail, despite the Bronx District Attorney’s Office requesting that he be held on $150,000 bail. Another individual, Yoessy Pino Castillo, was encountered at the border in Texas in May 2023 and was released. Castillo was later arrested in New Jersey on suspicion of shoplifting and burglary tool manufacturing. Yojairo Martinez, also arrested during the raid, had been arrested by U.S. Border Patrol agents in September 2022 and released.

The three migrants subject to ICE detainers are Johan Jose Cardenas Silva, Yerbin Benjamin Lozada Munoz, and Javier Jose Albornoz Marchan. Silva was determined to have entered the U.S. illegally at another time and a judge had ordered his deportation in March 2023. Munoz was taken into custody at the border in October 2022 before being released, while Marchan had been arrested multiple times for suspected shoplifting, weapons possession, and possession of a controlled substance with intent to sell.

The case highlights the ongoing challenges faced by immigration enforcement authorities at the U.S. border and within the country. Despite being previously apprehended at the border, these individuals were released into the U.S. and went on to be involved in criminal activities, including possession of weapons and drugs. The fact that some of them were re-arrested highlights a gap in the system that allows individuals with criminal histories to remain in the country illegally.

Authorities are now beginning deportation proceedings for the migrants who were re-arrested, while efforts are being made to locate and apprehend one individual who remains on the loose. The case serves as a reminder of the importance of comprehensive and effective immigration enforcement measures that prioritize public safety and national security. It also underscores the need for coordination between federal and local authorities to address the challenges posed by illegal immigration, criminal activities, and the potential threats that may arise.

As the situation unfolds, it is essential for immigration enforcement agencies to collaborate with law enforcement partners and take necessary actions to address the issue of illegal immigration and its associated risks. The case of the Venezuelan illegal immigrant squatters in New York City serves as a cautionary tale and a call for increased vigilance in protecting the borders and ensuring the safety and security of communities across the country. By addressing these challenges proactively and effectively, authorities can prevent similar incidents and uphold the rule of law.
