Michael Jack, who has been serving as Winnipeg’s chief administrative officer since 2021, has announced his departure to the mayor and Executive Policy Committee (EPC) on Monday. With almost 25 years as a city employee, Jack has worked in various roles before being appointed as CAO. In a statement released on Monday, Jack expressed his belief that it is time for someone new to lead the City’s Public Service with a fresh perspective. He compared his leadership to that of a hockey coach, stating that while he feels he has been a good leader with a good team, it is time for a new leader to take the team to the next level.

Following Jack’s announcement, Mayor Scott Gillingham plans to recommend an interim CAO on Tuesday, with the process of selecting a permanent replacement for Jack starting with the appointment of a selection committee. Gillingham commended Jack for his years of service and his role in guiding the city through the COVID-19 pandemic and the subsequent recovery phase. Jack’s last day on the job will be June 28, marking the end of his tenure as Winnipeg’s CAO. The city will now begin the process of finding a new leader to continue the work that Jack has done.

Throughout his time as CAO, Jack has been instrumental in leading the City of Winnipeg through various challenges, including the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. His leadership has been commended by Mayor Scott Gillingham, who praised Jack for his dedication and service. Under Jack’s guidance, the City’s Public Service has navigated through difficult times and now looks towards the future with a need for new leadership to continue the progress that has been made.

As the city begins the search for a new CAO, the selection committee will play a crucial role in finding the right candidate to fill Jack’s shoes. The interim CAO recommended by Mayor Gillingham will provide stability during the transition period, ensuring that the City’s operations continue smoothly. The permanent replacement for Jack will need to possess the necessary skills and experience to lead the City’s Public Service effectively and build upon the foundation that has been established under Jack’s leadership.

With Jack’s departure scheduled for June 28, the City of Winnipeg will soon be under new leadership in the role of CAO. Jack’s decision to step down and allow someone new to lead with a fresh perspective reflects his dedication to the city and its continued success. The selection of a new CAO will be a critical decision for the city, as the individual chosen will have a significant impact on the direction and future of Winnipeg. As the process unfolds, the city will look to build on the progress made under Jack’s tenure and continue to serve its residents effectively and efficiently.
