Mexican police discover tents and question individuals in search for two missing Australians and one American in Baja

Mexican authorities in Baja California have launched an investigation into the disappearance of two Australian surfers and an American who went missing over the weekend. Tents belonging to the three individuals were found along the Pacific coast, near the city of Ensenada. Chief prosecutor María Elena Andrade Ramírez stated that three individuals have been questioned in connection to the case, although their involvement remains unclear. Evidence found at the scene suggests a link to the missing surfers and the American, who had failed to check into their accommodations in Rosarito.

The Australian surfers, Jake and Callum, were reported missing by their mother, Debra Robinson, who expressed concerns for her diabetic son, Callum. The American in their company was identified as Jack Carter Rhoad, although this has not been confirmed by the U.S. Embassy in Mexico City. The U.S. State Department acknowledged reports of a missing American citizen in Baja, but provided no further details. Authorities are coordinating efforts with Australian and U.S. officials to locate the missing individuals, but the delay in reporting their disappearance has complicated the search efforts.

The investigation remains open to all possibilities, including the involvement of drug cartels in the area. Andrade Ramírez emphasized that important information related to the case cannot be disclosed to the public at this time. The prosecutor expressed concerns over the time that had passed since the individuals were last seen, suggesting that vital hours had been lost due to the delayed reporting of their disappearance. The case is reminiscent of a 2015 incident where two Australian surfers were killed in Sinaloa state, believed to be victims of highway bandits. This tragic event serves as a reminder of the dangers faced by foreigners in certain regions of Mexico.

The search for the missing surfers and American continues in Baja California, with local authorities working diligently to uncover any leads that could help locate them. The discovery of their abandoned tents has provided crucial evidence that may shed light on their whereabouts. As the investigation progresses, the focus remains on finding Jake, Callum, and Jack, and ensuring their safe return. The collaboration between Mexican, Australian, and U.S. officials underscores the international effort to resolve this troubling case and bring closure to the families of the missing individuals. The uncertainty surrounding their disappearance underscores the risks associated with traveling in certain regions of Mexico, where criminal activities pose a threat to locals and tourists alike.
