Meta encourages the use of VR during flights

Meta recently announced the introduction of “Travel Mode” for its Quest virtual reality headsets, allowing users to utilize them while flying. This update now allows travelers to watch movies, play games, and even answer emails while on an airplane. The tracking technology of the headsets was previously designed for on-the-ground use, causing virtual objects and windows to drift when in motion. However, after tuning the algorithms to account for a plane’s movement, the Quest headsets can now be used on planes with a stable and consistent experience.

To make the experience even more convenient for travelers, Meta is partnering with Lufthansa to offer Quest 3 headsets with the Travel Mode feature to certain business class passengers. With this partnership, Lufthansa becomes the first airline to provide these headsets on commercial flights. The custom content available on these headsets will be pre-loaded, ensuring access even without a Wi-Fi connection. The content includes episodes from travel podcasters with 360-degree videos, movies, TV shows, virtual sightseeing previews, games like Connect Four and Chess, as well as meditation exercises.

For flights with complimentary Wi-Fi, the Quest headsets will detect the network and prompt the user to join. The browser will automatically launch for access to the airline’s selection of entertainment, or users can watch movies already downloaded to their Quest library. The headset may also detect when on an airplane and prompt the user to activate Travel Mode, offering optimized features for plane travel. While Travel Mode is currently only optimized for planes, the company plans to add support for other modes of transportation, such as trains, in the future.

The Lufthansa Group has invested $2.7 billion to create the new Allegris Business Class Suite, offering travelers a luxurious flying experience. The suite includes private flying rooms with large seats, personal wardrobes, dining tables, and more. Quest 3 headsets and specialized content will be available to passengers flying in these suites starting this summer. This partnership marks a significant step in enhancing the in-flight entertainment experience for travelers, providing them with exclusive content and activities to enjoy while on board.

Mark Zuckerberg announced the Travel Mode update on his Instagram account, showcasing the new features and functionalities of the Quest virtual reality headsets. By introducing this feature, Meta aims to make virtual reality entertainment more accessible and enjoyable for travelers, taking the in-flight entertainment experience to a whole new level. As the demand for innovative and immersive entertainment options continues to grow, advancements like Travel Mode offer a glimpse into the future of in-flight entertainment technology.
