Melbourne’s Lord Mayor to Resign in June

In a recent post on social media platform X, former candidate for lord mayor of Melbourne, Hinch, announced his withdrawal from the race due to financial constraints. Hinch cited the estimated campaign costs of $250,000 – $500,000 as the primary reason for his decision, as he did not have the resources to raise the necessary funds. Hinch had initially expressed his interest in running for office in late February when the future of current lord mayor, Capp, was still uncertain. However, it was ultimately revealed that Capp would be seeking a third term as lord mayor.

In a statement following Hinch’s withdrawal, Capp reflected on her time as lord mayor, highlighting the challenges faced during her tenure. Capp emphasized the need for strong leadership in the face of internal and external issues within the City of Melbourne, including unacceptable councillor behavior and delays on major projects like the renewal of Queen Victoria Market. Despite these challenges, Capp noted the city’s progress and revitalization under her leadership, with Melbourne emerging as Australia’s largest city, the world’s third most liveable, and the fourth-best student city globally. Capp also pointed to record-breaking attendance at major events, driving foot traffic and boosting business across the city.

Capp acknowledged the significant challenges faced by business owners and residents, particularly in light of the global pandemic and subsequent lockdowns. However, she expressed confidence in Melbourne’s upward trajectory and its role as a key driver of Victoria’s economy and a major contributor on the national stage. Capp’s statement highlighted the resilience and progress of the city under her leadership, despite the ongoing hardships faced by many in the community. Her focus on economic growth, city revitalization, and community engagement were central themes in her response to Hinch’s withdrawal from the mayoral race.

Hinch’s decision to withdraw from the race was met with disappointment by some, as he had been seen as a potential candidate for bringing fresh perspectives and ideas to the office of lord mayor. However, the financial challenges of mounting a successful campaign proved to be a significant barrier for Hinch, leading to his ultimate decision to step back from the race. While Hinch expressed regret at not being able to pursue the opportunity further, he acknowledged the realities of the situation and the financial constraints that played a key role in his decision.

As the mayoral campaign in Melbourne continues to unfold, the dynamics of the race have shifted with Hinch’s withdrawal and Capp’s decision to seek re-election. The upcoming election will now feature a different set of candidates vying for the position of lord mayor, each with their own visions for the future of Melbourne. The withdrawal of Hinch and the subsequent statements from Capp have shed light on the challenges and opportunities facing the city, as well as the importance of leadership in driving its continued growth and success. The race for lord mayor of Melbourne remains a key focus for residents and stakeholders alike, with the outcome likely to have a significant impact on the city’s future direction and development.
