New York State Sen. Zellnor Myrie is considering a primary challenge to Mayor Eric Adams, who is widely disliked. Myrie, a progressive representing Brooklyn, is seen as a strong candidate, but defeating an incumbent mayor is a tough task. Critics point out that Myrie’s marriage to Diana Richardson, a former state assemblywoman with a controversial past, could be a hurdle for him in the election.
In addition to Myrie, other Democrats are expected to challenge Adams in the primary election in June 2025. Adams is facing criticism for his handling of issues such as the migrant crisis and a federal probe into his campaign fundraising. A recent poll showed his approval rating at just 16%. Myrie’s impressive legislative record and background as the son of Costa Rican immigrants may appeal to voters, but he will face challenges in gaining name recognition and support outside of his senatorial district.
Myrie has worked as a legislative director and an associate at a law firm before being elected to the state Senate in 2018. During his time in office, he has achieved significant legislative victories, such as passing strong affordable housing and tenant protection laws, and criminal justice reforms. Despite his accomplishments, Democratic campaign strategist Chris Coffey notes that beating an incumbent mayor is difficult, and Myrie will need to build widespread support to succeed in the primary election.
Myrie’s wife, Diana Richardson, has a controversial history that could impact his campaign. Richardson was arrested for alleged child abuse, made inflammatory remarks about Jews, and had an outburst at a community board hearing. She resigned from the state Assembly in 2022 and was later fired from a job as Brooklyn deputy borough president due to reports of creating a toxic workplace. Additionally, she and Myrie sued the city and police department after being involved in a Black Lives Matter protest incident.
Despite Richardson’s controversies, Myrie is expected to appeal to voters in Brooklyn, especially within the Black community. Political professor John Mollenkopf notes that Brooklyn is a key center of Black politics in New York City and State, making it a significant constituency for mayoral candidates. As the field of challengers to Mayor Adams grows, each major constituency in the city will have appealing candidates to support. Ultimately, Myrie will need to navigate his own strengths and weaknesses, as well as those of his wife, to secure a successful campaign in the primary election.
