Medvedev: Russia serious about nuclear threats as Biden approves limited military strikes

A senior ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin, Dmitry Medvedev, has warned that Russia is not bluffing about using tactical nuclear weapons against Ukraine amid the ongoing conflict. This statement comes after President Biden authorized Kyiv to launch U.S.-supplied weapons at military targets just over the border in Russia that are supporting an offensive against the northeastern Ukrainian city of Kharkiv. Medvedev stated that Russia sees all long-range weapons used by Ukraine as being controlled by NATO countries, which could lead to further escalation in the conflict. The West’s ongoing support of Ukraine has raised concerns about the conflict transitioning to its final stage.

The White House has confirmed that Ukraine has been given the green light to use American weaponry to hit back at Russian forces hitting them or preparing to hit them, while also prohibiting the use of army tactical missile systems or long-range strikes inside Russia. Russia has been using staging locations near the border to support its attacks against Ukraine, and the U.S. has quietly delivered long-range weapons to Ukraine for the first time in March, which have since been deployed against Russian military forces inside Ukraine. Germany has also backed this move. Medvedev warns that the use of Western weapons against Russia could become a casus belli, an act that provokes war.

The conflict in Ukraine has intensified in recent weeks as depleted Ukrainian troops are losing ground to Russian forces. The U.S. recently agreed to send an additional $60 billion in aid to Ukraine, as the country continues to face a Russian onslaught in the border region of Kharkiv. Despite Russia’s forward progress stalling, Ukrainian forces are struggling against the ongoing attacks. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has indicated that it is only a matter of time before Ukraine utilizes the Western weaponry to strike Russian territory. Meanwhile, Gen. Charles Brown has suggested that NATO military trainers will eventually be sent to Ukraine to assist in training new recruits closer to the front line for faster deployment.

Medvedev’s recent comments are in line with his previous hardline stance against the West, warning that putting boots on the ground in Ukraine would amount to a declaration of war against Russia. He has also raised the prospect of nuclear war, cautioning NATO allies that a defeat for Russia in Ukraine could provoke a nuclear war. The ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine, coupled with the West’s support of Ukraine, has raised concerns about a potential escalation. As the situation continues to evolve, it is essential for all parties involved to consider the consequences of their actions and work towards a peaceful resolution to the conflict.

In conclusion, the conflict between Russia and Ukraine has reached a critical juncture, with the threat of the use of tactical nuclear weapons looming large. The ongoing support of Ukraine by the West has further intensified tensions between the two sides, with the potential for further escalation. As Ukrainian forces struggle to hold their ground against Russian attacks, it is crucial for all parties involved to exercise restraint and prioritize diplomatic solutions to avoid further bloodshed and devastation in the region. The deployment of Western weaponry and the potential involvement of NATO military trainers in Ukraine raise concerns about a wider war in the region, underscoring the need for de-escalation efforts and dialogue to achieve a lasting peace.
