President Sergio Mattarella raised alarm about the freedom of information, highlighting the constant temptation of public authorities to limit freedom of information rather than ensuring and supporting these spaces of freedom. He made these remarks during a meeting with the European Alliance of News Agencies (Eana) at the Quirinale. Mattarella also expressed concern over global actors intervening in the information sphere, attempting to define access standards and guidelines, often using digital platforms and artificial intelligence without regard for legislation protecting the integrity of the industry.

The President emphasized the importance of quality primary information provided by news agencies, calling it essential nourishment for the democratic and free system on the continent. He stressed that freedom and pluralism of the media are crucial for upholding essential democratic rights, such as the right to freedom of expression and information. Mattarella highlighted that free, independent, and diverse information is a right of citizens and a duty for everyone, serving as an antidote to manipulative phenomena in the media.

Mattarella acknowledged the digital transformation impacting every aspect of life and acknowledged its remarkable opportunities. However, he also warned of the challenge facing democratic societies to prevent the regression of fundamental rights resulting from the acceleration of changes, emphasizing the importance of upholding the indivisible and universal values on which the European Union is founded.

The President’s focus on protecting freedom of information and preventing manipulation in media reflects a growing concern about ensuring the quality and integrity of the information landscape amidst the digital age. By highlighting the role of news agencies in providing essential primary information, Mattarella underscores the importance of supporting independent and diverse media sources that are crucial for democracy and freedom.

The convergence of technology, media, and politics poses new challenges to democratic societies, requiring vigilance in protecting fundamental rights and values. Mattarella’s call to defend freedom of expression and information is a timely reminder of the need to preserve these rights in the face of evolving threats to democratic norms and the integrity of information. In a rapidly changing media environment, ensuring a free and independent press is essential for fostering informed citizenship and safeguarding democracy.
