Maryland governor approves bill creating ‘Center for Firearm Violence Prevention’ inspired by Biden

Maryland Governor Wes Moore recently signed a bill establishing the first statewide gun violence prevention center called the Center for Firearm Violence Prevention and Intervention. This center will operate within the Maryland Department of Health and aims to consolidate and better coordinate the state’s public health approach to preventing gun violence. The center will work in partnership with local governments, advocates, and medical professionals engaged in violence intervention programs to ensure they are adequately funded and informed by the best available data.

Governor Moore’s actions follow President Biden’s establishment of the Office of Gun Violence Prevention in September 2023. Maryland is the first state to adopt a statewide agency against gun violence, signaling a commitment to addressing the issue on a broader scale. In addition to the gun violence prevention center, Moore also signed the Growing Apprenticeships and the Public Safety Workforce (GAPS) Act, which aims to better fund police departments in the state. The bill proposes short and long-term actions to address challenges with hiring and retaining officers, by reforming the apprenticeship model for public safety officials and requiring the establishment of a model policy for law enforcement officer wellness programs.

The laws signed by Governor Moore come at a critical time as Baltimore continues to be plagued by crime. Statistics from the Baltimore Police Department show high numbers of aggravated assaults, robberies, shootings, and homicides in 2024. Governor Moore emphasized the importance of public safety as a top priority for his administration and expressed a commitment to moving differently on the issue. The goal is to make Maryland safer by supporting victims, strengthening pipelines to law enforcement jobs, and addressing the gun violence epidemic head-on.

Governor Moore’s efforts have been applauded as a significant step towards enhancing public safety in the state of Maryland. By establishing the Center for Firearm Violence Prevention and Intervention and signing the GAPS Act, he is taking proactive measures to address the root causes of gun violence and improve support for law enforcement. With ongoing challenges in hiring and retaining officers, these initiatives aim to provide a more viable pathway to law enforcement careers and ensure that officers receive the necessary support for their demanding work.

As Governor Moore continues to push for comprehensive approaches to public safety, there is recognition that more work needs to be done to address the complex issues surrounding gun violence. By partnering with local communities, advocates, and medical professionals, the state is taking a collaborative approach to preventing gun violence and improving intervention programs. The focus on data-driven strategies and adequate funding for these programs signals a commitment to making meaningful progress in reducing crime and enhancing public safety in Maryland.
