Many Indian workers head to Israel for construction employment opportunities

The ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas in Gaza has led to a labor shortage in Israel, prompting the country to recruit workers from India. Dozens of Indian construction workers have departed for Israel this week under an agreement signed between the two countries before the outbreak of hostilities. The Indian External Affairs Ministry spokesman emphasized the importance of the safety and well-being of the workers, urging Israeli authorities to take care of them.

A previous agreement signed during a visit to India by Israeli Foreign Minister Eli Cohen last May allowed for around 40,000 Indians to work in the fields of construction and nursing in Israel. The initial batch of more than 60 construction workers left for Israel on Tuesday, with images of a send-off ceremony posted by the Israeli ambassador to India on social media. The recruitment process for these workers began in January, with thousands of Indian laborers seeking opportunities in Israel through government recruitment centers in states like Uttar Pradesh and Haryana.

While India condemned the Hamas attack on Israel that triggered the current conflict, it voted in favor of a U.N. General Assembly resolution last December calling on Israel to halt its fighting for humanitarian reasons. The country has also reiterated its support for a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian dispute. With 18,000 Indians already employed in Israel, mostly in caregiving roles, the departure of more Indian workers reflects the ongoing demand for labor in Israel as a result of the conflict with Hamas.

The Indian workers heading to Israel are expected to help address the labor shortage caused by the restrictions on Palestinian workers following the Hamas attack in October. The departure of these workers highlights the cooperative relationship between India and Israel, as well as the commitment to supporting each other in times of need. As tensions continue to escalate in the region, the presence of Indian workers in Israel serves as a unique example of international collaboration and support in the face of adversity.

Moving forward, both countries will likely continue to strengthen their partnership in various fields, including labor, as they navigate the challenges posed by the ongoing conflict in the region. The deployment of Indian workers to Israel not only meets the immediate need for labor but also underscores the importance of international cooperation in addressing global issues. As the conflict between Israel and Hamas shows no signs of abating, the presence of Indian workers in Israel may play a crucial role in supporting the country during this challenging period.
