The television and film industry in Manitoba is experiencing a positive recovery following strike action by two of the industry’s largest unions that ended in September of the previous year. In 2024, a number of productions have already been filmed in Winnipeg, with more projects being added as time goes on. The growth in the industry is partially due to an increase in film-related infrastructure, such as the construction of a new 188,000-square-foot facility by Big Sky Studios. CEO Ed Kolic is optimistic about the future, citing positive signs and potential for larger productions to come to Winnipeg.

In 2022, over 25 productions were filmed across Manitoba, showcasing a range of genres from Christmas films to action comedies. Lynne Skromeda, CEO and film commissioner for Manitoba Film and Music, highlights the province’s strength as a film destination due to its versatility in doubling for various cities like Chicago, New York, and Boston. Manitoba offers a variety of locations, including rural settings, that appeal to filmmakers looking for a specific aesthetic. Additionally, government support in the form of tax incentives and accessibility helps create a competitive environment for the industry to thrive.

Looking ahead, the industry aims to generate $1 billion in production volume over the next decade, leading to more job opportunities both in front of and behind the camera. Skromeda emphasizes the different paths individuals can take within the industry, mentioning unions like the director’s guild and the need for skilled professionals such as accountants. Overall, there is optimism surrounding the growth potential of Manitoba’s television and film sector, with stakeholders hopeful for continued success in the coming years.

Despite the challenges faced during the strike action, Manitoba’s television and film industry has shown resilience in bouncing back and continuing to attract productions to the province. The completion of a new state-of-the-art facility by Big Sky Studios has been a significant factor in this growth, allowing for larger and more complex productions to be filmed in Winnipeg. The diversity of locations in Manitoba, from urban settings to rural landscapes, offers filmmakers a range of options to choose from, further solidifying the province’s appeal as a filming destination.

Government support, such as tax incentives and accessibility, plays a crucial role in fostering a competitive environment for the industry to thrive. With plans to generate $1 billion in production volume over the next decade, there are high hopes for increased job opportunities and economic growth within the television and film sector in Manitoba. Professionals interested in joining the industry are encouraged to explore different avenues, such as joining unions or pursuing specific skill sets like accounting, as there is a growing demand for various roles in the field.

Overall, stakeholders in Manitoba’s television and film industry are optimistic about the future, with a strong belief in the province’s potential to continue attracting diverse productions and fostering growth. The industry’s ability to overcome challenges and adapt to changing circumstances demonstrates its resilience and commitment to excellence. With a supportive government, a range of filming locations, and a variety of opportunities in the sector, Manitoba remains a promising destination for filmmakers and industry professionals looking to contribute to the growth of television and film production in the province.
