A 20-year-old man named Sai Varshith Kandula pleaded guilty to attempting an attack on the White House by crashing a rented U-Haul truck into barriers protecting the property. The incident occurred on May 22, 2023, when Kandula flew from St. Louis to Washington, DC, rented a U-Haul, and drove to the White House where he crashed into the barriers at an intersection. After exiting the damaged vehicle, Kandula waved a banner with a Nazi swastika before being arrested by US Park Police and Secret Service. The crash caused damage to both the National Park Service and U-Haul International, but no agency or White House personnel were injured in the incident.

Kandula, who was born in Chandanagar, India, and was a lawful permanent resident of the US with a green card at the time of the attempted attack, is set to be sentenced on August 23. He admitted to investigators after his arrest that his intention was to gain access to the White House to “seize political power” and replace it with a dictatorship based on the ideology of Nazi Germany. Kandula had been planning the attack for weeks and even contemplated arranging for President Joe Biden to be killed to accomplish his objective. Prior to renting the U-Haul, he had unsuccessfully attempted to request 25 armed guards and an armored convoy from a Virginia security company, as well as renting other long trucks.

The charge Kandula pleaded guilty to, willful injury or depredation of property of the United States, carries a maximum prison sentence of 10 years. The crash he caused resulted in over $4,000 in damage to the National Park Service and more than $50,000 in damage to U-Haul International. Despite his attempt to carry out the attack, no one was physically harmed in the incident. Kandula’s actions and motivations were driven by a desire to overthrow the existing government and establish a dictatorship aligned with the principles of Nazi Germany. The severity of the incident highlights the potential threats posed by individuals with extremist ideologies and violent intentions.

The incident involving Kandula’s attempted attack on the White House underscores the importance of constant vigilance and security measures in protecting important government institutions from potential threats. The fact that he was able to get as far as crashing a vehicle into barriers near the White House before being apprehended highlights the need for robust security protocols and readiness to respond to such incidents. Law enforcement agencies, such as the US Park Police and Secret Service, played a crucial role in quickly apprehending Kandula before any harm could be inflicted on individuals in the vicinity. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing challenges posed by individuals with extremist ideologies and the need to remain vigilant in preventing potential acts of violence.

In the aftermath of Kandula’s guilty plea and forthcoming sentencing, there will likely be continued scrutiny and evaluation of security protocols and measures in place to protect government buildings and key officials. Efforts to identify and address potential threats from individuals with violent intentions will be heightened, as authorities seek to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future. The case also highlights the importance of thorough investigations and intelligence gathering to uncover and disrupt potential threats before they materialize. The cooperation between various law enforcement agencies and security organizations was crucial in preventing any harm from coming to White House personnel and safeguarding the property from significant damage.
