Upon exiting the truck, Kandula retrieved a flag featuring a Nazi swastika from his backpack. Although authorities did not find any weapons, ammunition, or explosives in his possession, Kandula admitted to Secret Service agents that his intention was to reach the White House, seize power, and take control the nation. He brazenly stated that he was willing to “Kill the President if that’s what I have to do and would hurt anyone that would stand in my way.” Kandula, a resident of Chesterfield, Missouri, confessed that he purchased the flag online because he admires Adolf Hitler and the Nazis’ history.
Kandula pleaded guilty to a felony charge of depredation of government property and faces a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison for his actions. Prosecutors have agreed to recommend a prison term of no longer than eight years for Kandula, but the final decision rests with U.S. District Judge Dabney Friedrich, who is set to sentence him on August 23. Kandula’s defense attorney, Scott Rosenblum, disclosed that his client is being treated for schizophrenia, and he plans to present a medical specialist to testify during Kandula’s sentencing.
