Man admits guilt in fatal shooting of off-duty police officer and friend in Houston

Jackson’s guilty plea brings some closure to the families of Briscoe and Riculfy, who were both well-respected members of the community. The shooting took place during a robbery attempt while the victims were dining at a Houston restaurant patio. Jackson, along with two other suspects, approached the victims, attempted to rob them, and then fired fatal shots. The suspects fled the scene but were later apprehended by authorities, leading to a trial for all involved.

The victims, Briscoe and Riculfy, were both members of the Zulu Social Aid & Pleasure Club and were on a trip with club members when the shooting occurred. Briscoe, a 13-year veteran of the New Orleans police department, was pronounced dead at the scene, while Riculfy succumbed to his injuries 10 days later in a Houston hospital. The senseless act of violence shocked both the local community and law enforcement, as it highlighted the risks that officers face even when they are off-duty and simply enjoying time with friends.

Harris County District Attorney Kim Ogg expressed her condolences for the tragedy, emphasizing that the case serves as a reminder that anyone can fall victim to violent crime regardless of their occupation or location. Ogg highlighted the fact that Briscoe was a well-trained police officer from a major city, yet he was targeted and killed while on vacation. The plea agreement reached with Jackson includes a 60-year prison sentence, with the requirement that he serve at least 30 years before being eligible for parole. Jackson’s formal sentencing is set for the near future.

The guilty plea from Jackson indicates his acknowledgment of responsibility for the murders of Briscoe and Riculfy. By pleading guilty to two murder counts, Jackson has spared the families of the victims the ordeal of a prolonged trial. However, two other suspects, Anthony Rayshard Jenkins and Khalil Nelson, are still awaiting trial in connection with the shooting. Both remain in custody as the legal process unfolds. The outcome of Jackson’s sentencing and the upcoming trials of the other suspects will bring some measure of justice for the victims and their loved ones.

The tragic shooting serves as a sobering reminder of the dangers faced by law enforcement officers, even in moments of relaxation and leisure. The loss of Briscoe and Riculfy has deeply impacted their families, friends, and colleagues, as they were valued members of the community. The swift apprehension of the suspects and the progress in the legal proceedings provide a sense of closure for those affected by the senseless act of violence. As the case moves forward, the focus remains on honoring the memories of the victims and ensuring that those responsible are held accountable for their actions.
