Macklemore cancels Dubai concert in protest of UAE supporting Sudan paramilitary forces

American rapper Macklemore recently announced the cancellation of his upcoming October concert in Dubai due to the United Arab Emirates’ alleged role in the ongoing Sudanese genocide and humanitarian crisis. The UAE has denied supporting the paramilitary force in Sudan, but United Nations experts have reported evidence suggesting otherwise. The conflict in Sudan began in mid-April 2023, leading to thousands of deaths and millions of people being displaced. The UAE has been accused of arming the Rapid Support Forces, despite being involved in peace talks to end the violence.

At a heated U.N. Security Council meeting, Sudan directly accused the UAE of arming the RSF, which led to a tense exchange between diplomats. The Emirati Foreign Ministry did not offer immediate comment on Macklemore’s decision to cancel the show. The rapper explained on Instagram that he made the decision in solidarity with the people of Sudan and due to his public support for Palestinians during the Israel-Hamas conflict. Macklemore expressed disappointment in having to cancel the show but insisted that he will not perform in the UAE until it stops supporting the RSF.

The Rapid Support Forces are a paramilitary group formed out of the Janjaweed fighters under former Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir, who was ousted in 2019. He is wanted by the International Criminal Court for crimes committed during the conflict in Darfur. Dubai, known for its tourist attractions and entertainment venues, has been a popular destination for international artists. However, performing in the UAE comes with challenges as the country has strict controls over speech and expression.

Other artists have faced criticism for performing in the UAE, with American comedian Dave Chappelle sparking controversy in Abu Dhabi when he referred to the Israel-Hamas conflict as a genocide. Macklemore’s decision to cancel his show in Dubai highlights the complexities artists face when balancing their artistry with political and humanitarian issues. The rapper urged his peers to consider using their platforms to mobilize for collective liberation and questioned the impact that artists could have if they took a stand against injustice.

Despite the cancellation of his Dubai concert, Macklemore remains committed to advocating for social justice and standing in solidarity with oppressed communities. The situation in Sudan serves as a reminder of the importance of holding governments and entities accountable for their actions in conflicts around the world. The rapper’s decision to prioritize his values over a performance opportunity demonstrates the power of artists to raise awareness and spark conversations about critical issues facing the global community.
