Macedonian election season kicks off with month-long campaign

North Macedonia’s presidential election kicked off with seven candidates vying for the largely ceremonial post in a two-round vote that will conclude on May 8. Campaign season officially started, allowing candidates to make speeches, hold rallies, and present their agendas. The first round is scheduled for April 24, with the two leading candidates facing off in a second round coinciding with the general election on May 8. Incumbent President Stevo Pendarovski and Gordana Siljanovska Davkova of the main opposition VMRO-DPMNE coalition are currently leading in the polls. Other candidates include law professor Biljana Vankovska, Foreign Minister Bujar Osmani, Arben Taravari, Mayor Maksim Dimitrievski, and Mayor Stevco Jakimovski.

The presidential election in North Macedonia follows a two-round system where a candidate must receive over 50% of the vote from all 1.8 million registered voters. In the second round, a minimum turnout of 40% is required for the result to be valid. Incumbent President Stevo Pendarovski is seeking a second five-year term with the support of the governing social democrats, while Gordana Siljanovska Davkova is representing the main opposition center-right coalition. Other candidates include law professor Biljana Vankovska, Foreign Minister Bujar Osmani, Arben Taravari, Mayor Maksim Dimitrievski, and Mayor Stevco Jakimovski. The candidates have started campaigning by making speeches, holding rallies, and presenting their agendas to the public.
