Luxury watch investigation leads to raid on Peru president’s residence

Police raided the home of Peru’s President Dina Boluarte in search of Rolex watches she had reportedly not disclosed, as part of a corruption investigation. About 40 officials were involved in the raid, which was broadcast on local television. The operation involved breaking into the president’s residence with a sledgehammer, and images showed government agents surrounding the house in Lima’s Surquillo district. Boluarte was not at home during the raid, which was authorised by the judiciary at the request of the attorney general’s office for the purpose of search and seizure.

The investigation into Boluarte was launched after reports surfaced that she had worn various Rolex watches at official events. In response to questions about affording such expensive timepieces on a public salary, Boluarte defended herself by citing her hard work since the age of 18. Attorney General Juan Villena criticised Boluarte’s request to delay her court appearance and emphasised her obligation to cooperate with the investigation. He also warned against the disposal or destruction of the Rolex watches and demanded proof of purchase.

The government comptroller announced the review of Boluarte’s asset declarations from the past two years for any irregularities. Boluarte, 61, has adamantly defended herself, stating that she entered the Government Palace with clean hands and will leave with clean hands. She came to power in July 2021 as vice president and social inclusion minister, then assumed the presidency in December 2022 after former President Pedro Castillo’s removal. Castillo’s attempts to dissolve Congress and rule by decree led to violent protests and at least 49 deaths.

Critics of Boluarte’s government allege an increasingly authoritarian nature as it resists calls for early elections and collaborates with Congress on laws that could compromise the independence of Peru’s judiciary. The ongoing investigation into undisclosed luxury watches, specifically Rolex watches, has raised concerns about transparency and accountability. Boluarte’s defiance in the face of criticism highlights the challenges facing her administration as it navigates political turmoil and unrest following the previous president’s controversial actions.

The joint operation between police and the prosecutor’s office to search for Rolex watches not declared by Boluarte underscores the seriousness of the corruption allegations. The televised raid on the president’s residence, with government agents using a sledgehammer to gain entry, has sparked public attention and scrutiny. Boluarte’s insistence on her integrity and long history of hard work may resonate with some supporters, but questions about the origins of her luxury items persist. As the investigation continues and authorities demand transparency, the outcome of the probe could have significant implications for Peru’s political landscape and Boluarte’s presidency.
