Lord Mayor candidate Arron Wood vows to eliminate Sally Capp’s ‘faulty’ Greenline trail

A recent update on the Greenline project in Melbourne reveals that Mayor Sally Capp and her running mate Erin Deering have committed to completing the Birrarung Mar component of the project, as well as the Seafarers Rest Park, with an estimated additional cost of $20 million. The Greenline project, aimed at unlocking the north bank of the Yarra River, has so far cost $23.1 million, with $20 million pledged by the federal government. Lord Mayor Nicholas Reece defended the project, comparing it to the Southbank Promenade that transformed the south bank of the river 30 years ago, and stating that it will double the river’s capacity for enjoyment by Melburnians.

Reece highlighted that three components of the project are already underway in partnership with the private sector, with a total timeline adjustment from four to 10 years in the council budget announced in May. He also mentioned that 17 out of the 21 parks announced by Wood were either under construction or committed to by the City of Melbourne. Despite criticisms from Committee for Melbourne chief executive Scott Veenker, who cited cost concerns and lack of benefit for businesses in the current economic climate, a business case report by Ernst & Young found that the Greenline development could bring $740 million in economic and community benefits to Victoria over the next two decades.

The latest version of the Greenline project has seen some scaling back, with the removal of a proposed swimming pool along the Yarra and a reduction of the envisioned 10-kilometer trail to four kilometers. Yarra River Business Association president Jeremy Vincent expressed disappointment at the funding shortfall, suggesting that the project may now need a 20-year timeframe to fully realize its potential impact of connecting the CBD to the river and shaping the city. Despite these challenges, the project aims to turn Melbourne into a true river city, with significant city-shaping implications and benefits for residents and visitors alike.

The Greenline project will be considered in the upcoming council meeting, providing an opportunity for councillors to review the latest project updates and financial implications. Mayor Capp and her team are focused on delivering on the commitments already made, including the completion of Birrarung Mar and Seafarers Rest Park. With significant investments already made and further funding secured, the project aims to enhance the Yarra River’s north bank and create new recreational and leisure opportunities for the community. The project’s adjusted timeline and ongoing partnerships with the private sector demonstrate a commitment to seeing the Greenline through to completion, despite challenges and criticisms from some stakeholders.
