Local sheriff requests FBI involvement in investigation of Black man’s hanging death in Alabama

The death of a Black man, Dennoriss Richardson, in Alabama is now under FBI investigation after being initially ruled a suicide by the local sheriff’s office. Richardson was found hanging in an abandoned house in Colbert County, miles away from his home in Sheffield. His wife, Leigh Richardson, denies that he took his own life and believes his death may be connected to a lawsuit he filed against the local police department. The community’s skepticism about Richardson’s death highlights a deep distrust of local law enforcement, particularly in a region with a history of lynchings targeting Black people.

The president of the local NAACP chapter, Tori Bailey, notes the community’s reaction to Richardson’s death is influenced by the area’s history of lynchings. With a long legacy of state-sanctioned violence against Black individuals, the community is calling for a more thorough investigation into Richardson’s death. The fear of retaliation from law enforcement has intensified for residents like Marvin Long, who also filed a lawsuit against the Sheffield Police Department. Multiple Black and Latino men have taken legal action against the department, citing excessive force and mistreatment by officers.

Civil rights attorney Roderick Van Daniel represents several individuals who have filed lawsuits against the Sheffield Police Department. These cases range from instances of officers using weapons like Tasers excessively to allegations of assault and menacing behavior. The lack of accountability and transparency within the department has fueled community distrust and fear of law enforcement. Sheriff Eric Balentine, who requested the FBI investigation into Richardson’s death, hopes that the probe will help alleviate concerns and rebuild trust within the community.

Despite his support for holding officers accountable for misconduct, Sheffield Mayor Steve Stanley expresses confidence in the majority of law enforcement officers. However, the history of cases involving excessive force and mistreatment of residents by the police has left many in the community feeling unsafe and wary of law enforcement. The funeral for Dennoriss Richardson was a somber reminder of the questions that remain unanswered surrounding his death, with calls for justice and transparency echoing through the service.

As the investigation into Dennoriss Richardson’s death continues, the community remains on edge, grappling with the legacy of racial violence and systemic mistrust of law enforcement. The FBI’s involvement in the case offers a glimmer of hope for transparency and accountability, but for many residents, the fear of retaliation and ongoing misconduct by local police looms large. The calls for answers and justice persist, as the community seeks closure and resolution to the tragic loss of a beloved father and community member.
