President Joe Biden and first lady Dr. Jill Biden are hosting a state dinner at the White House in honor of Kenyan President William Ruto and first lady Rachel Ruto. The guest list includes former President Bill Clinton, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, actors, sports commissioners, and various politicians. The state visit emphasizes the strong alliance between the United States and Kenya, with the meticulously planned event showcasing the close relationship between the two countries.

Former President Barack Obama met with the Kenyan leader earlier in the day but will not attend the dinner. Hollywood celebrities such as Wilmer Valderrama and Sean Penn are also among those invited to the event, alongside dignitaries and philanthropists. The dinner will be held in a transparent pavilion on the South Lawn, adorned with candles, and will feature a three-course meal prepared by the White House Executive Chef, including a chilled heirloom tomato soup and a duo of butter-poached lobster and smoked beef short ribs.

Sports commissioners Roger Goodell and Adam Silver were among the guests invited to the state dinner, highlighting the involvement of sports in fostering international relations. Philanthropist Melinda French Gates and former Meta COO Sheryl Sandberg are also in attendance, showcasing a mix of personalities from various sectors. Country star Brad Paisley and the Howard Gospel Choir will provide entertainment for the black-tie event, adding to the glamour and excitement of the evening.

Members of Congress, including Democratic Reps. Ilhan Omar and Veronica Escobar, as well as GOP Rep. Michael McCaul, were invited to the dinner, demonstrating bipartisan support for the diplomatic event. Rev. Al Sharpton expressed confidence in democracy winning in 2024, hinting at the upcoming election cycle. Journalists such as CNN’s Bianna Golodryga, NBC News’ Lester Holt, and the Associated Press’s Darlene Superville were also invited to cover the event, highlighting the media’s presence at the state dinner.

This state visit marks the first time an American president has hosted an African leader for a state visit since 2008, underlining the significance of the occasion. President Biden has hosted six state dinners since taking office, showcasing his commitment to strengthening relationships with global allies. The event signals a celebration of unity and diplomatic ties between the U.S. and Kenya, with guests from various sectors coming together to honor the special relationship between the two countries.
