Sarah McBride, the first openly transgender state senator in the United States, has now been elected as the first openly trans member of Congress. Her victory comes at a time when transgender rights are under attack in Republican-governed states across the country. Despite facing demeaning campaign ads and rhetoric, McBride easily won her blue state’s only seat in the U.S. House of Representatives. However, even before being sworn in, she faced opposition from congressional Republicans, with Rep. Nancy Mace of South Carolina proposing a ban on transgender people using U.S. Capitol restrooms that correspond to their gender identity.

McBride’s journey to Congress started in her hometown of Wilmington, Delaware, where she was involved in Democratic politics from a young age. She came out as transgender while serving as the president of American University’s student government, which she initially feared would derail her political ambitions. However, with the support of her family and pastor, she continued to pursue her goals. McBride has been instrumental in passing transgender nondiscrimination laws in Delaware and has worked as a spokesperson for LGBTQ-rights organizations.

Known for her hard work and dedication, McBride has focused on issues such as health care, paid family leave, childcare, and affordable housing. She chaired the health committee in the state Senate and helped expand access to Medicaid and dental care for underserved communities. Her signature accomplishment was helping pass paid family and medical leave in Delaware, a personal issue for McBride following the terminal illness of her husband, Andrew Cray. Despite facing personal tragedy, McBride continues to work tirelessly for her community.

In her personal life and political career, McBride strives to embody a politics of grace and compassion. She often reflects on the kindness and decency of her late husband, seeking to follow his example in her interactions with others. While some activists have criticized her approach to responding to anti-LGBTQ politicians, McBride believes in the importance of kindness and grace in public discourse. She acknowledges the challenges faced by trans people in accessing public facilities but remains committed to responding with grace even in the face of adversity.

Sarah McBride’s historic election to Congress marks a significant milestone for transgender representation in government. Her dedication to advocating for LGBTQ rights and her commitment to a politics of compassion and grace set her apart in the current political landscape. Despite facing opposition and adversity, McBride remains focused on serving her community and working towards a more inclusive and equitable society. As she prepares to take on her new role in Congress, McBride’s story serves as inspiration for marginalized communities and a reminder of the importance of representation in government.
