Carroll Dawson, a former assistant coach and general manager for the Houston Rockets, has passed away at 86. Known as “CD,” he dedicated almost 30 years of his life to the Rockets (from 1980 to 2007) and uniquely served as an assistant during each of the team’s four NBA Finals runs. This included their back-to-back championships in 1994 and 1995. Dawson was described by the Rockets as someone whose remarkable contributions to basketball were outshined only by his character. He is highly regarded for his uplifting spirit, sense of humor, and his kindness.
As an assistant, Dawson was famed for his ability to develop big men and had worked with renowned players like Elvin Hayes, Hakeem Olajuwon, Ralph Sampson, and Moses Malone. This competence in player development also played a significant role during his tenure as general manager, a role that also involved the day-to-day management of the Rockets’ scouting department.
Dawson’s strategic approach to enhancing the team’s roster was renowned, leading to successful trade deals which brought renowned NBA stars like Scottie Pippen, Charles Barkley, Cuttino Mobley, and Tracy McGrady to the Rockets. Dawson’s contributions also included the drafting of Yao Ming in 2002 and the appointment of Daryl Morey as his successor in 2007.
In recognition of Dawson’s incredible contributions to basketball and the Rockets, a banner recognizing his legacy was raised at the Toyota Center. Beyond his contributions to the NBA and the Rockets, Dawson also played a significant role in building the four-time WNBA Champion Houston Comets, making it the most successful WNBA franchise of all time.
Serving as the executive vice president of the Comets, Dawson was fundamental in the signing of WNBA legends like Tina Thompson, Cynthia Cooper, and Sheryl Swoopes. He also had a key role in the appointment of coach Van Chancellor. The significant impact of his leadership and expertise is commemorated in the success of both teams.
Rockets general manager Rafael Stone expressed his admiration and gratitude for the chance to have worked with Dawson, describing him as a Houston Rockets legend. Stone reflected on all he learned from Dawson’s unique ability to utilize humor to make his point and connect with people, mentioning the timeless quality that most people lack.
