Lawsuit challenges coroner’s ruling in Nevada prisoner’s death following beatings

The mother of a Nevada inmate who died last year after being beaten by corrections officers has filed a lawsuit accusing prison staff of conspiring with the coroner’s office to cover up the death. The lawsuit alleges that Christian Walker was viciously beaten on multiple occasions and left to die at High Desert State Prison near Las Vegas, highlighting a larger pattern of excessive force within the state’s prison system. Despite an autopsy report attributing Walker’s death to natural causes, a forensic pathology expert recommended a re-evaluation of the case.

The lawsuit names the state Department of Corrections, its director, several prison administrators, medical staff, unnamed guards, and the Clark County coroner’s office as defendants. Walker, who was 44 when he died, had spent over two decades in prison after being convicted of second-degree murder. His family described him as a man of faith who worked as an auto mechanic and barber, earning certificates in Christian studies and computer programming while incarcerated. Walker’s transfer to High Desert State Prison resulted in brutal assaults by guards, leading to severe injuries and his eventual death.

Walker was first assaulted with batons and pepper spray, causing him to lose consciousness and be hospitalized with significant injuries. He was discharged and returned to the prison, where he was beaten a second time. Despite being placed in the prison infirmary, Walker was left unattended and found dead the next morning. The lawsuit filed by his family accuses the corrections department of wrongful death, cruel and unusual punishment, as well as negligence by guards and medical staff. It also accuses the coroner’s office of deliberate indifference.

The timeline of events presented in the lawsuit differs from the dates listed in Walker’s autopsy report. The family’s attorney, James Urrutia, stated that the timeline is based on medical records and witness statements, including those from first responders. However, access to crucial records and security footage from the corrections department has been denied, hindering a complete understanding of Walker’s death. The lawsuit seeks justice for Walker and shines a light on the alleged misconduct within Nevada’s prison system.

The case highlights the challenges faced by incarcerated individuals and their families in seeking accountability for alleged abuse and neglect within the prison system. The lawsuit represents a larger systemic issue of excessive force and inadequate medical care within the state’s correctional facilities. The pursuit of justice for Christian Walker underscores the importance of transparency and accountability in ensuring the safety and well-being of all individuals in custody. The legal battle initiated by his mother serves as a call for reform and sheds light on the need for oversight and accountability in the treatment of inmates.
