In Nevada, a swing state that could play a critical role in determining the outcome of the upcoming presidential election, Latino voters represent a significant portion of the population, making up nearly one-third. The majority of Latino voters in the state are registered as non-partisan, presenting a key demographic that both President Biden and former President Trump will seek to win over. Elisa Martinez, a first-time voter in Nevada, emphasizes the importance of voting, stating that it is crucial for securing a voice in shaping the future. Martinez, who has been involved in political campaigns since childhood, highlights issues such as immigration and education as top priorities for Latino voters like herself.

The last presidential election saw a close race between Biden and Trump for the Latino vote, with issues such as immigration and healthcare at the forefront for many voters, including first-time voter Jiromi Pena. Pena shares her personal connection to these issues, explaining how her father’s undocumented status impacted his access to healthcare. Pena also stresses the importance of educating young voters on the candidates to help them make informed decisions based on their own experiences. Overall, issues related to immigration reform and healthcare are seen as crucial for Latino voters in Nevada, reflecting their personal and community concerns.

Despite the significance of the Latino vote in Nevada, many young Latino voters remain unaffiliated with any political party. Vote Nevada, a nonprofit organization focused on voting education, reports that a majority of voters aged 18-34 are registered as nonpartisan or independent. This trend underscores the need for increased education and outreach efforts to engage younger voters in the political process and ensure that their voices are heard. CEO Sondra Cosgrove emphasizes the importance of providing information and resources tailored to this demographic to encourage their participation in elections and civic engagement.

As the 2024 presidential election looms, Latino voters in swing states like Nevada are poised to have a significant impact on the outcome. The engagement of first-time voters like Elisa Martinez and Jiromi Pena highlights the importance of issues such as immigration reform, healthcare, and education for this demographic. By reaching out to and informing young voters, organizations like Vote Nevada aim to increase voter participation and ensure that the diverse voices of the Latino community are represented in the political process. With efforts to provide education and resources tailored to younger voters, the goal is to empower them to make informed decisions and play a meaningful role in shaping the future of their communities and the country as a whole.
