Salvador Illa, the PSC candidate in the upcoming Catalan elections on May 12th, expressed his admiration for Madrid in a recent interview with Cadena SER. However, he also criticized certain aspects of Madrid’s political landscape, noting that there is a sense of urgency to seize power at any cost. Illa believes that some politicians in Madrid prioritize short-term gains over long-term goals. Despite his admiration for the capital, Illa stated that he does not agree with the direction taken by some in Madrid.

Regarding Pedro Sánchez’s decision to remain as President of the Government, Illa admitted that he is unsure of the potential impact on the upcoming Catalan elections. He noted that the reaction from the pro-independence parties to Sánchez’s decision seemed exaggerated. Illa observed that it appeared as though these parties were demanding Sánchez to both continue and resign at the same time. Despite this uncertainty, Illa praised Sánchez’s efforts towards normalizing the situation in Catalonia. He acknowledged the President’s personal commitment and willingness to take uncomfortable paths for the sake of Catalunya.

Illa declared that if he were to win the elections, he would strive to form a strong and stable government. He emphasized three key criteria that would guide his decision-making process when forming alliances: stability, social democracy, and a focus on public services. Illa stated that his red lines in potential coalition agreements would exclude Vox and Aliança Catalana. The PSC candidate also mentioned the challenges that may arise if Junts decides to maintain their support for Catalan independence. He asserted that the direction Junts chooses to take would play a significant role in determining the feasibility of forming a government.

When asked about potential alliances with other parties, Illa reiterated his commitment to stability and social democracy. He emphasized the importance of prioritizing the welfare of the people through strong public services. Illa highlighted his willingness to engage in dialogue with various parties to ensure the formation of a government that can effectively address the needs of the Catalan people. Despite these intentions, Illa acknowledged the potential difficulties that could arise if pro-independence parties maintain their stance on Catalonia’s independence.

Illa’s remarks about the political landscape in Madrid and the challenges faced by pro-independence parties in Catalonia reflect the complexity of the upcoming elections. The delicate balance between stability, social democracy, and Catalonia’s independence will likely shape the formation of the future government. Illa’s emphasis on forming a strong and stable government highlights his commitment to addressing the needs of the Catalan people. The forthcoming election results and the decisions made by various parties, particularly Junts, will play a crucial role in determining the political landscape in Catalonia. Despite the uncertainties and challenges ahead, Illa’s determination to lead a government focused on stability and social democracy offers a glimpse into his vision for the future of Catalunya.
