Latest in Ukraine War: Kyiv Targets Russian Oil Depot, 2 Russian Bombers Hit in Previous Strike

Ukraine attacked an oil depot in Russia’s Kursk Oblast, causing a fire and damage to the facility. The attack was carried out by the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) in cooperation with the Armed Forces, leading to a fire at the oil depot. This is part of a series of attacks on military facilities and infrastructure in Russian regions bordering Ukraine. In addition, Ukrainian forces struck power substations in Kursk Oblast, indicating ongoing aggression in the region.

In a separate incident, two Tu-22M3 bombers were damaged in an attack on the Olenya airfield in Russia’s Murmansk Oblast. The attack, carried out by Ukrainian military intelligence, caused significant damage to the bombers. The restoration of the aircraft may take several months. Despite satellite images showing no evidence of a Ukrainian strike, Ukrainian military intelligence confirmed their involvement in the attack, which targeted several Russian airfields.

The U.S. has committed to providing weapons for F-16 jet fighters that will be delivered to Ukraine. Up to 79 F-16s from European countries are expected to be sent to Ukraine, with the U.S. supplying air-to-ground munitions, precision-guidance kits, and advanced air-to-air missiles. This support aims to bolster Ukraine’s air force, which has been depleted over the years of war. The European partners of the fighter jet coalition were hesitant to provide ammunition, prompting the U.S. to step in to fulfill Ukraine’s urgent needs.

As the financial burden of the war with Russia continues to increase, Ukraine will require an additional $12-15 billion in foreign financial support in 2025. Finance Minister Serhii Marchenko emphasized the need for continued assistance as the war is unlikely to end next year. The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has allocated significant funds to support Ukraine, but additional financial assurance is necessary to sustain the economy amid ongoing conflict.

The Czech government is exploring potential involvement in the Ukrainian Legion project in Poland, a volunteer military unit composed of Ukrainian men living in Poland. The Czech Defense Ministry is gathering information about the legion and considering its own participation. Over 4,000 Ukrainian soldiers have been trained in Czechia in 2023, reflecting the country’s commitment to supporting Ukraine’s defense efforts. The formation of the Ukrainian Legion aims to engage Ukrainian expats in defending their homeland.

These developments highlight the escalating conflict between Ukraine and Russia, with Ukraine continuing to target Russian military infrastructure and expand its military capabilities with international support. The financial strain of the war on Ukraine underscores the need for ongoing foreign assistance to sustain the country’s economy. The involvement of other European countries in supporting Ukraine militarily and financially demonstrates a united front against Russian aggression in the region.
