Last year ‘The Marvels’ reportedly lost $237 million, far exceeding ‘The Flash’

The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) has had its fair share of underperforming movies, with Eternals and The Marvels being two standouts that deserve better reviews and box office results. Despite being fun, The Marvels has suffered a huge loss of $237 million for Disney, making it the biggest box office loss of the last year. This loss is particularly significant considering the movie had a budget of $455 million and needed half a billion dollars just to break even. This puts it above other underperforming Marvel features and even DC’s The Flash in terms of financial disappointment.

The list of biggest box office bombs also includes other Disney movies like Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, Wish, and Haunted Mansion, with only The Flash from Warner Bros. making an appearance. These movies span across different genres, from superhero films to animated and live-action kids’ films, showing that underperformance is a widespread issue for Disney across the board. This raises concerns about the studio’s ability to deliver successful projects in the future.

Despite concerns about “superhero fatigue,” upcoming MCU projects like Deadpool and Wolverine are expected to do well, even with an R-rating. However, there are doubts about the potential success of Captain America: New World Order and Thunderbolts. Additionally, the list does not include Disney Plus TV projects like the underwhelming Secret Invasion, which also points to a misallocation of spending by Disney. It’s clear that Disney needs to reassess its strategies to avoid more financial disappointments in the future.

The pressure is on Disney to turn things around, but the timeline for this remains uncertain. With high-profile projects like Fantastic Four on the horizon, there is potential for redemption. However, there are concerns about the studio’s ability to deliver successful projects, especially in light of the recent box office losses. As Disney works to address these issues, it remains to be seen how long it will take for the studio to bounce back from this string of underperforming movies.

Overall, the box office losses for movies like The Marvels highlight the challenges faced by Disney in delivering successful projects in the current entertainment landscape. With the future of the MCU and other properties at stake, Disney’s ability to adapt and innovate will be crucial in ensuring continued success in the industry. Fans and investors alike will be watching closely to see how Disney responds to these setbacks and shapes its strategy moving forward.
