New York Knicks fans made headlines for “invading” the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia for Games 3 and 4 of their series against the 76ers. The increased presence of Knicks supporters prompted Joel Embiid to express frustrations with his own fanbase and how the arena sounded like Madison Square Garden. As the series moved back to Philly for Game 6, the 76ers made efforts to keep Knicks fans out by purchasing over 2,000 tickets to give away to their own fans. Although the tactics were somewhat successful, there was still a noticeable contingent of Knicks fans in attendance.
Despite the mix of Knicks and 76ers fans in the crowd, Knicks coach Tom Thibodeau acknowledged the positive aspects of playing in a lively and passionate environment like Philadelphia. He praised the city as a great sports town with a rich basketball history, recognizing both the dedicated 76ers fans and the traveling Knick supporters. Thibodeau emphasized the support of Knicks fans, describing them as the best in the world who follow the team wherever they go, contributing to a great atmosphere for the players.
Statistics from Vivid Seats estimated that around 15 percent of the Game 6 crowd consisted of Knicks fans, contributing to their audible presence during the TV broadcast. Josh Hart, whose late three-pointer secured the Knicks’ victory and advancement to the second round, acknowledged the challenging environment created by the Philadelphia crowd, albeit with a hint of sarcasm. He credited the resilience of both teams in a tough series characterized by a high pace of play, highlighting the comfort his team feels playing in such environments.
With the Knicks moving on to face the Indiana Pacers in the second round, the dynamic of fan presence may shift as traveling to Indiana presents a greater challenge for Knicks supporters. Nevertheless, New York once again holds homecourt advantage as the series begins at Madison Square Garden on Monday. The upcoming matchup against the Pacers will test the Knicks and their fans in a new setting, with the team aiming to maintain their momentum and continue their postseason success.
